What We Do
BVFA is the leading collective action organization for food security in the Bow Valley. As a nonprofit society, we champion food security in the Bow Valley by encouraging community-driven, equitable, and sustainable food practices.
Here are just some of our achievements:
Recognized as a national leader in food security, BVFA members have been invited to present at conferences and forums across Canada.
Established the Bow Valley Food Charter, creating a clear framework for building a more resilient, sustainable food system.
Produced the Imagining Food series, highlighting the unique food security challenges and opportunities in our region.

BVFA’s governance has firm foundations in social justice and is inspired by best practices for nonprofit leadership in Canada. As a BVFA volunteer board member, you’ll lead innovative initiatives to drive our mission forward.

What to Expect
BVFA is small but mighty—meaning our volunteer board is both governance and operational requiring hands-on commitment as well as big picture thinking.
Board members should expect to:
Think beyond their specific role, remaining adaptable and agile.
Advocate for fair, sustainable local food systems that give everyone in the Bow Valley access to appropriate, affordable, fresh food.
Represent BVFA within the community, supporting our coordinators, attending events, and amplifying our mission and vision.
Build relationships with funders and decision makers to secure support for BVFA’s initiatives.
Foster collaboration and work with other agencies, boards and organizations.
Have established networks within the Bow Valley Community and be willing to engage them in our work.
Target start date: April 2025 (in time for the next AGM)
Length of term: Minimum term of 2 years with the option of staying longer.
Who should apply?
BVFA board members are changemakers ready to transform food security in the Bow Valley. Ideal candidates are:
Experienced in advocacy and lobbying for social change.
Willing to mentor and support working committee members from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Agile, innovative, and courageous when faced with challenges.
Experienced in decision making.
Purpose-driven and passionate about food security and food systems work.
Dedicated to learning about food systems at all levels as well as the intersection of food systems with climate change, social justice, and circular economies.
