Research Assistant Needed!
Building Equity by Reimagining Governance: A Non-Profit Confronts Racism, Colonialism, and Neoliberalism
Our project began in response to critiques by a racialized member of the Bow Valley Food Alliance (BVFA) board. This critique underlined the need to address inequitable governance structures, challenge power disparities, and build food sovereignty. Using participatory action research, this project aims to understand how nonprofits generally, as well as the BVFA specifically, can reimagine governance structures in ways that create equitable relations within and beyond the organization. Project goals include:
Identify and learn from existing nonprofit governance models rooted in anti-oppression;
Make recommendations for how to improve nonprofit governance structures within the BVFA
Develop a toolkit to share lessons learned with broader nonprofit networks and food movements.
The research team is looking for a research assistant to support the work of this research project for 130 hours over a 5-6 month period for $36/hour (with possibility to extend hours depending on interest and funding). Potential tasks include:
• Conduct a literature review on nonprofit governance models with a focus on governance structures rooted in anti-racist, anti-colonial, and anti-capitalist frameworks
• Participate in regular research team meetings over zoom
• Support the research team with data collection during learning circles and focus groups as well as data analysis using Nvivo Software
• Support the development and writing of internal reports and a public toolkit
